Standing Strong Against Cyberbullying: A Kid's Guide

In today’s world, where we connect with friends and learn online, it’s important to know how to stay safe. One big challenge some kids face is cyberbullying. It’s not always easy to spot, but knowing what it is and what to do can help you and your friends stay happy and safe online. Let’s learn how to be a cyber-hero!

What is Cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is when someone uses digital technology – like phones, computers, or tablets – to upset, embarrass, or hurt another person. This can happen through social media, messaging apps, gaming platforms, or even email. It’s different from regular bullying because it can happen anywhere, anytime, and often involves things being shared with many people very quickly. [1]

Nearly half of teens (46%) have experienced some form of cyberbullying. [2] This shows how important it is for everyone to understand it.

Cyberbullying can look like:

  • Sending mean messages: This could be texts, emails, or messages on social media that are unkind or threatening.
  • Spreading rumors: Sharing untrue stories about someone online.
  • Posting embarrassing photos or videos: Sharing pictures or videos of someone without their permission to make fun of them.
  • Excluding someone online: Intentionally leaving someone out of online groups or games to make them feel bad.
  • Impersonation: Pretending to be someone else online to cause trouble.

What to Do if You or a Friend are Cyberbullied

It can be scary and upsetting to experience cyberbullying, but remember, you are not alone, and it’s not your fault! Here’s what you can do:

  1. Don’t respond: It’s hard, but don’t reply to the cyberbully. This can sometimes make the situation worse.
  2. Save the evidence: Take screenshots of the messages, posts, or images. This is important proof if you need to show an adult.
  3. Block the bully: Most social media platforms and messaging apps allow you to block people. This stops them from contacting you.
  4. Tell a trusted adult: This is the most important step! Talk to a parent, teacher, school counselor, or another adult you trust. They can help you figure out the next steps and support you.
  5. Report it: Many online platforms have ways to report cyberbullying. Your trusted adult can help you do this.

Being a Kind Digital Citizen

We all have a role to play in making the internet a safe and friendly place. Remember to:

  • Think before you post: Once something is online, it’s hard to take back. Make sure your words and pictures are kind and respectful.
  • Be an upstander, not a bystander: If you see someone being cyberbullied, tell a trusted adult. Your actions can make a big difference.
  • Protect your passwords and personal information: Don’t share your passwords with anyone, and be careful about what personal details you share online.
